Networking Tip #1 – Have a Plan: If you attend a conference or business lead networking event and just assume you’ll start talking to whoever looks open, you’ll likely come away frustrated and disappointed. You shouldn’t go to an event like this and expect to wing it. Set a minimum number of people you’ll talk to, or a goal to specific with specific people, and target that goal. Have questions and topics in the back of your mind to help spur on conversation and plan ahead to develop the foundation for great business relationships.

Networking Tip #2 – Ask Questions: There’s no better way to get a potential contact talking than to sit down and ask them to tell their story. People love to tell their story, especially where they had proud victories and overcame staggering obstacles in order to find success. When you ask questions, stay fixed and attentive to show that you’re genuinely interested – this keeps the focus on the contact and will win you social points & credibility.

Networking Tip #3 – Actively Listen: This is a skill that some people really need to work on. When you’re talking with a potential contact, don’t look around the room or look over to other people. Stay focused and actively listen to what’s being said. Give them the perception that you’re interested and engaged with them, that they have your focus. Find common ground in the conversation and build on that.

Networking Tip #4 – Give Referrals: Think of it more along the lines of being willing to give referrals than actually opening up immediately and giving referrals to all new contacts right away. When you’re willing to give you should others that you’re not just networking to pull in leads. Care and give to others and you’ll get a lot more in return.

Networking Tip #5 – Follow up: Make sure you’re quick to follow up with those contacts that seem to offer the best potential for generating business leads. The follow up needs to happen right away, generally within the first 2 days after making your first contact. Discuss business, talk shop, and schedule a meet up where you can talk more business on a direct level.
