Retirement is coming at a later age so those employees become co-workers with younger individuals and the unmistakable generational differences become evident. The differences of these generations should be managed, meaning managers and owners need to take notice and figure out what to do about the differences. It is important to understand how to manage all generations, which there are four of them.
All organizations should be aware of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator; it determines each different personality type. A company will teach their employees about the different types of personalities to better serve their customers. The generations are also unique, all of which can benefit a company, just as long as employees remember these differences. It can be difficult managing generational differences since there is not one right way but each type is worth having on board because the company benefits.
Today businesses run better because they are integrated with technology. The new technologies come easy for Generation X and the Millenniums and they will have new insight for the business. The older generations are not as computer savvy as the younger ones, and the apparent generational differences then become apparent. These generations can work together as they can give different insight on the new ways to benefit a company.
Companies hear different ideas from everyone which is another good reason to have generational differences at work. Generation X and Millenniums are more loyal to themselves than their employer while the older generation feels more loyalty toward their employer. Companies can learn to find ways to satisfy those needs of the younger generations such as changing job duties so they are not bored. On the other hand, Traditionalists and Baby Boomers don’t like change, especially if there is nothing wrong with the process, but everyone can get through it by working together.
Good reasons why having different generations are beneficial include the views, opinions and expectations of everyone. Better solutions and ideas will prove to be beneficial when there is diversity in the office. The younger generations can learn a thing or to from the older generations because of their wisdom and experience. The company wins every time because these younger generations will take what they learned and integrate their own ideas.
Having a gap in generations throughout the workplace can be difficult but is surely profitable. Addressing these factors through some type of employee training is something upper management should remember. The younger generations are seen working with the older generations because the age people are retiring at is later, the perceptible generational differences become apparent so if a company can manage these differences they will be successful.
