Trophies Over The Ages

Trophies symbolize victory. They are not only a sign of accomplishment but also a sweet reminder of achievement. It gives the beholder the passion to do even better and enthuses him or her. This is why trophies are usually designed in order to highlight the field of accomplishment of the person, for example a mini statue of a man kicking a football as a sports trophy.

In earlier days, trophies were used as markers of victory of the winning army in the battlefield and were built on the ground itself. The practice started in Greece when the battle descriptions were engraved on the enemy’s artillery and were exhibited by the winning army as symbols of victory. These were given as offerings to the gods who had brought victory for them. In fact the very word trophy is a derivative of the Greek word ‘tropaion’ which means ‘defeat’.

Romans had their own unique way of displaying their success through trophies. They built tall pillars and columns that contained a sculpted trophy high up for everyone to see and admire their victory. After sometime, the kings and monarchs started giving out chalices to the best athletes in the kingdom.

Designing a trophy is generally a difficult process. Just like other design jobs, even trophy designing requires a significant amount of analysis, market research and a thorough consideration of the elements to be used. A trophy should not just be elegant but also strong enough to remain safe for years as a prized possession of the winner.

These days, trophies are given for great performance in a lot of fields such as sports, academics, business etc. The market is replete with trophies of different shapes, sizes, designs as well as with various types of inscriptions. Traditionally used metal statuette over a wooden base is not the only choice nowadays. You can easily find trophies in glass, gold and silver finish, and even trophies made of fibre or crystal. Several stores sell trophies that are found in different shapes and designs, giving customers a huge variety to choose from. With so many options available, it is now a simple job to identify or customize the suitable trophy for any event.
