Search Engine Optimisation, more often referred to as SEO, is simply the practice of enhancing certain elements of your website specifically with the intention of increasing rankings within Google and other major search engines for the keywords and search terms relating t your website’s content. But why is it such a big deal?
Search engines use what we call spiders or crawlers to sour the web and return all the information that will then be displayed in the search engines according to what people are searching for. Optimising your website basically means implementing minor things within the page that indicate to the bots what your topic matter is and what keywords might be relevant to you. It’s critical not to let this hinder the human user experience of the site though.
There’s a good reason that people would invest in search engine optimisation, as we steadily become a society full of cyber shoppers. We simply love the Internet. We can get anything there, from clothing, to food, to car insurance and a whole host of other things as well. We certainly take advantage of it, too.
In the UK alone, shopper spent a staggering 38 billion in 2009 – despite only officially coming out of recession towards the end of that very year. Forrester Research also forecast that the online spend in the UK will reach 56 billion by 2014. With all that money being spent online, is it really any wonder that businesses want their websites to be the ones that are found by the consumers seeking the products and services they retail?
The Internet has become absolutely impossible to ignore and marketing departments in businesses globally are increasingly moving their budgets into digital marketing forms. More and more businesses are becoming acutely aware of the fact that simply having a website is no longer enough and that, in order to get the most from it, search engines provide an immense marketing opportunity online. Through SEO, businesses have the potential to enhance their website’s visibility specifically to the consumers already looking for their range of products and services.
